A Sussex electrical contractor based in Battle
Lake Electrical are electrical contractors in Sussex, trading since 2008 from Unit 15, Little Barn, Wylands Farm on Powdermill Lane in Battle. We are a family-run, owner-led business and most of our work is commercial, covering testing and inspection, lighting, electric heating, data cabling, backup power and full installations, right up to the main intake panel that feeds a whole building.
On the domestic side we take on full rewires, major renovations and high-end builds rather than small repairs or single socket changes.

LED lighting for the University of Sussex Library
At the Sussex Library on the Falmer Campus in Brighton, we replaced more than 1,500 light fittings across the basement and ground floor with energy-efficient LED, and upgraded and extended the emergency lighting at the same time. The project was worth £400,000 and ran from June to August 2026.
The Library is a Grade II* listed building designed by Sir Basil Spence, and it did not close for a single day. Our teams worked mostly between 4am and 1pm, Monday to Friday, so the noisy work was finished before the busiest hours, and finished areas were handed back while we carried on elsewhere. The upgrade was completed on programme and within the agreed budget, and the University estimates it will save around 84 tonnes of carbon a year.
Main panel and switchboard replacements
Replacing a main switchboard means taking a building off supply, so careful planning is essential. As main contractor for the University of Sussex, we replaced the main LV switchboards in three separate buildings, a programme worth around £785,000 combined. Each switchboard was changed in a shutdown of roughly four to six days, with essential circuits moved onto temporary generator supplies first and our engineers working back-to-back shifts through each one.
We ran every trade under one programme, including licensed asbestos removal, builders’ works and firestopping, so the University had a single contractor to deal with.
Further west, at a university laboratory in Chichester, we changed a £310,000 main intake panel over three days using backup generators, and the laboratories stayed powered throughout.
Rewires for larger homes in Sussex
Our domestic work in Sussex is full rewires and complete installations for substantial properties. For a private residence in Battle, we rewired the main house and its outbuildings, put in new distribution boards, and installed the infrastructure for Lutron lighting control and a Control4 home automation system, along with a structured network, supplies for the pool plant and hot tub, external lighting and EV charging.
See the Battle residence project or read more about our high-end domestic rewires.
Sussex towns we cover
Our regular coverage across Sussex includes Brighton and Hove, Lewes, Eastbourne, Hastings, Crawley and Worthing, and our university work has taken us to Chichester. We also work across Kent and Surrey, and travel further for larger commercial projects, including London.
We work for schools, academies, colleges and universities, churches and places of worship, offices and commercial property and industrial sites across the county.
How we price and plan a Sussex project
For larger work we visit first. We look at the existing installation, the available capacity and access, and what you are planning, because a full distribution board or a supply without enough capacity can change a job once it has started. We would rather find that before we price it.
Your quotation sets out what is included, with any additional or remedial work shown separately. We then agree access, isolations and working hours around how the building is used, including evenings, weekends, school holidays and phased working. When the installation is finished, we test it, certify it and hand over the records the building needs.
We are not trying to compete on the lowest price. You are paying for the knowledge of the engineer and a clear scope at the start.
Accredited and DBS checked
We are an NICEIC Approved Contractor and SafeContractor accredited, and every engineer is DBS checked, which matters on school, college and university sites.
Alongside clients who come to us direct, we work under main contractors, consultants and architects, pricing from drawings, specifications and tender documents.
